Air fryer salmon: which video to watch

● verified 8 Aug 2026

By the editorial team · human-reviewed before publishing

An air fryer solves the two things that put people off cooking salmon at home: it does not stick the way a pan does, and it is done in under ten minutes. Most videos nail the seasoning but skip the one thing that actually tells you whether the fish is cooked — a clear doneness check. The videos that give you a temperature target or a specific visual test are the ones worth your time.

Short verdict

For most people, Detoxinista is the one to watch first. It is the only video here that covers both fresh and frozen fillets as separate methods, cites the FDA's 145 °F internal temperature target, and runs to under five minutes of runtime. If you want a more ambitious spice profile rather than a minimal olive-oil-and-lemon approach, Simply Home Cooked gives you a full homemade rub — smoked paprika, brown sugar, dried thyme — with the ratios to make it yourself.

Air Fryer Salmon | How to Cook Salmon in the Air Fryer (Fresh or Frozen!)

Detoxinista · 4:36 · Feb 2021

Detoxinista walks through two complete methods back to back: fresh salmon cooked at 400 °F for 7 minutes, and frozen salmon handled in two stages — a 7-minute thaw cycle at 360 °F, then the seasoning applied mid-cook and a further 7 minutes at the same temperature. The seasoning is minimal (olive oil, lemon juice, one garlic clove, salt and pepper) so the focus stays entirely on the technique rather than any particular flavour.

Why it ranks here: It is the only video in this set that properly handles the frozen-fillet scenario most people actually face. At 2:10 the presenter cites the FDA's 145 °F internal temperature target and notes that salmon will carry-over cook during resting, so pulling it a degree or two early is fine — a small but useful distinction. The chapter structure (preheat, fresh tips, seasoning, cook times, frozen method, leftovers) means you can jump straight to whichever situation applies without watching the whole thing. No proprietary blends, no upsells.

Perfect Air Fryer Salmon Recipe

Simply Home Cooked · 5:31 · Apr 2021

Dina from Simply Home Cooked seasons two six-ounce fillets with garlic grated on a microplane and olive oil, then applies a spice rub of smoked paprika, brown sugar, dried thyme, salt and black pepper. At 3:02 she explains that foil is fine under an oven-style air fryer tray but should never be placed inside a basket air fryer, where it blocks the circulation holes.

Why it ranks here: The spice rub is the real contribution. Commenters made it three times in a week; several passed it to family. The garlic-via-microplane step at 0:56 produces a finer, more evenly distributed result than chopped or pressed garlic. The foil distinction at 3:11 is a practical detail that most videos omit entirely. One caveat worth knowing before you start: the video says only 'make sure they're fully cooked through' at 3:28 with no specific check method — the 145 °F thermometer tip comes from a viewer in the comments, not from Dina herself.

AIR FRYER SALMON | my favorite 15-minute dinner recipe!

Downshiftology · 5:26 · Jun 2022

Lisa at Downshiftology opens with a two-minute primer on salmon varieties — king, coho, sockeye, and steelhead trout as a more affordable alternative — and notes that wild Alaskan salmon is seasonal from mid-May to end of September. She then coats the fillets in Dijon mustard before the spices, describing at 2:58 the rationale: the mustard holds the spice layer against the fish and stops it drying out in the circulating heat.

Why it ranks here: If you are standing in front of a fish counter with no idea what to buy, the salmon-types section earns this video its place. The Dijon mustard base produces a visibly different crust from the plain oil-and-spice approach most other videos use. The guidance to 'slightly undercook and add time if needed' at 3:51 is sound, though it stops short of a temperature target — pair it with the 145 °F figure from Detoxinista if you are unsure.

Best marinade approach

Healthy Air Fryer Salmon

The Stay At Home Chef · 3:32 · Mar 2022

The Stay At Home Chef uses a wet marinade — lemon juice, olive oil, soy sauce and minced garlic — in which the fillets can sit for anywhere from a few minutes to several hours before going into a preheated 400 °F basket. At 2:53 the presenter gives the clearest doneness guidance of any video here: 145 °F confirmed with a thermometer, plus easy flaking with a fork as a backup test.

Why it ranks here: The soy sauce adds umami depth that no dry-rub recipe in this set can match, and leftover marinade doubles as a baste for vegetables cooked alongside. The 145 °F callout at 2:53 is the most explicit in the set. One commenter raises an important caveat about the video's 'up to 24 hours' marinating window: the lemon juice (acid) will begin breaking down the fish's protein after a couple of hours, leaving the texture mushy rather than firm. Thirty minutes to four hours is the safe range.

Air Fryer Salmon

Cooking with Coit · 3:57 · May 2021

Justin from Cooking with Coit keeps the method to three steps: rub the fillet with olive oil, coat with salt, pepper and smoked paprika, then cook at 370 °F for six minutes — eight minutes for a larger piece. The video is under four minutes and uses nothing beyond what most households already have.

Why it ranks here: If you want the shortest possible path to cooked salmon with no rub, no marinade and no shopping required, this is it. The lower temperature (370 °F versus the 400 °F used by every other video here) is never explained, and Justin does not give a doneness check for the viewer to replicate at home — he describes his own result at 3:12 as 'cooked perfectly in the inside' without demonstrating how you would confirm yours. Use a thermometer or the fork-flake test from another video alongside this one.

Best honey garlic glazed

Air Fryer Honey Garlic Glazed Salmon Recipe

Whip It Up With Jay · 5:29 · Dec 2021

Jay at Whip It Up With Jay builds a honey garlic marinade in a bowl, coats the fillets and rests them for about 30 minutes at room temperature, then lines the air fryer basket with two sheets of foil before cooking at 390 °F for 12 minutes. Lemon slices go under the fish; the residual sauce from the bowl is drizzled over the cooked salmon before serving with parsley.

Why it ranks here: This is a different dish from the others on this page. The glaze caramelises against the foil and produces a sticky-crisp exterior that a dry spice rub cannot replicate. The longer cook time (12 minutes) suits the glazed, sauced preparation. Jay mentions cooking 'until it gets to the proper internal temperature' at 3:21 but never states what that temperature is; use 145 °F (63 °C) as your target.

Where the videos disagree

What temperature should the air fryer be set to?

Five of the six ranked videos use 400 °F for fresh salmon. Whip It Up With Jay uses 390 °F for the glazed preparation. Cooking with Coit uses 370 °F. Detoxinista drops to 360 °F specifically for the frozen-fillet thaw stage before returning to higher heat.

Our read: 400 °F is the standard starting point for fresh salmon of average thickness (around 1 to 1.5 inches). The 370 °F used by Cooking with Coit is never justified and, without a doneness check, leaves more uncertainty. The 360 °F frozen stage in Detoxinista is a deliberate two-step technique, not a general substitution for 400 °F — do not conflate the two.

Can you line the air fryer basket with foil?

Simply Home Cooked says at 3:11 not to line a basket-style air fryer with foil because it blocks the holes and stops air circulating. Whip It Up With Jay uses two sheets of foil in the basket to contain the honey garlic sauce.

Our read: Both are correct for their context. Foil covering the basket holes defeats the circulating-air mechanism for dry cooking. For a sauced or glazed preparation where liquid would otherwise burn on the element, foil with the fish placed on top is practical — the sauce pools around the fish rather than running away. The Simply Home Cooked warning applies to the plain-seasoned approach, not to the glazed method.
